The courage to make decisions is the hallmark of Leadership
August 3, 2020The only good decision is one that is already made and so is a bad decision. You can only give yourself a chance if you make that decision. Martin Kiarie, CEO and Co-founder of Bean Creative says there is no other way about it. Do you have the courage to make a decision? You won’t always have a check list to know that it is time for a change. As a Leader, sometimes you just know and you can see what the business needs.
Martin quotes Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon, saying if you walk into a room that is full of ice-cream you will stay but if you walk into a room that is full of fire and brimstone then you will leave. It really depends on the decision you make. If you go into a partnership and you smell a rat, you realise that the deal looked good on the outside but going in, its fire and brimstone, then it is time to go.
The business world can be be very forgiving. The world only sees your status quo and nothing more. If your business is successful that is how they will treat you, if you are not doing so well, that’s how they will treat you. The world will not remember your ups and downs, and the tough decisions you had to make. That’s your cross to bear.
The decisions that Martin had to make so that his business would see the most growth were also the hardest. They included retrenching people, partnering with other companies which meant that they had to share revenues and some other risky ones that would have led Bean interactive to be broke if the deal did not go well.
There are so many what if’s that go into making a decision but sometimes you have to make things simple. What does your business need? Do it. What happens next, that’s another decision. He says when you get there you’ll know what to do.
